What is the Global Talent Visa Program?
The Global Talent Visa Program is a streamlined visa pathway. It is for highly skilled professionals to work and live permanently in Australia. Australia wants the brightest and best global talent to work in ten future-focused sectors. The program aims to support the economy by introducing innovative skills to high priority industries, which comprises two pathways:
- The Global Talent pathway
- The Distinguished Talent pathway
The streamlined Global Talent pathway is for highly skilled applicants who have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievements within the priority sectors, which are:
- Resources
- Agri-food and AgTech
- Energy
- Health industries
- Defence, advanced manufacturing and space
- Circular economy
- Digitech
- Infrastructure and tourism
- Financial services and FinTech
- Education
The Distinguished Talent pathway is for extremely talented applicants who have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievements working in other sectors for either a profession, sport, the arts, or academia and research.
Who is eligible for the Global Talent Visa Program?
To be invited to apply for a visa under the Global Talent Visa Program, a candidate will be highly skilled in one of the 10 target sectors and able to attract a salary that meets the high income threshold. The Australian Government is looking for highly skilled professionals, senior executives and exceptional individuals who are at the cutting edge of innovation within the target sectors, who will help create opportunities for Australia by promoting innovation and creating jobs. Recent PhD graduates who can demonstrate exceptional talent and international recognition in one of the ten target sectors may be eligible for invitation.
The individuals must:
- Prove they are internationally recognised with evidence of outstanding achievements;
- Be prominent in their field of expertise;
- Provide evidence that they would be an asset to Australia, in their area of expertise;
- Have no difficulty obtaining employment in Australia or becoming established in their field;
- Have a recognised organisation or individual with a national reputation in the same field in Australia nominate them as global talent. The nominator must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, eligible New Zealand citizen or Australian organisation;
- Have the ability to attract a salary at or above the Fair Work high-income threshold of AUD158,500.
How to apply for the Global Talent Visa Program?
Step 1. Expression of interest
Submit an expression of interest (EOI) using the Global Talent Expression of Interest form. The EOI form and all supporting documentation must be submitted in English. You will need various documents to submit an EOI, and translations for all documents in other languages.
If you meet the program parameters, you will receive an invitation email. This will include a unique invitation reference identifier and an invitation code. If your EOI is unsuccessful, the Department of Home Affairs will notify you via email.
Step 2. Apply for a visa
After you receive an invitation reference identifier and invitation code, lodge a Global Talent (subclass 858) visa application via ImmiAccount.
